When you put these rows and columns together, you get a matrix of the five styles with the compromising style in the middle. This compromising approach represents a balance of being cooperative and uncooperative, unassertive and assertive.

As you look more closely at these different styles, you may recognize one or another as the more usual ways you tend to deal with a conflict yourself, and that other people you know tend to use certain styles more often. You’ll also find that under certain conditions you may be more likely to use one style rather than another, and others will similarly be more drawn to a different approach under those same conditions. While everyone may try all the styles at some point, people have certain style preferences. Certain styles might also be more appropriate and more effective in resolving particular types of conflict, and these may or may not match the usual styles you or others use. So there can be some complexity in assessing your own and other’s styles and matching these to what works best in dealing with a particular conflict.

I’ve described each style below. These were touched on in Chapter 3, but are explained in more detail here. Then I will discuss the ways of applying each style at the end of the chapter.
